A Bahamian corrections officer is now at the centre of a double-murder conspiracy case, after prosecutors accused her of plotting to kill her own boss in a scheme they say unfolded over WhatsApp.

Twenty-two-year-old Shante Taylor returned to court where she denied allegations that she conspired with another person to murder Corrections Officer Charles Curtis on July 30, 2024. Prosecutors say the alleged plot was discussed in a WhatsApp chat, but Taylor insisted she had no part in it when she appeared before Justice Guillimina Archer-Minns.

Taylor, who is out on US$20,000 bail, has been suspended from her job and placed on half-pay as the case continues. She is expected back in court on November 27.

But this is not the only legal storm hovering over the young officer.

Taylor is also facing trial over another alleged murder plot, this time involving Elvardo Thompson Jr, who was shot dead outside her home in Pinecrest Gardens on July 20, 2024. She is accused along with four other people of conspiring to murder Thompson and then carrying out the killing.

That matter is expected to go before Justice Neil Brathwaite next year.
