Two men held after multi-million dollar ganja bust in St Thomas

September 22, 2025

The Jamaica Constabulary Force's fight against the deadly guns-for-drugs trade scored a major victory on Sunday night when investigators intercepted more than 1,900 pounds of ganja on a beach in St Thomas.

About 11:00 p.m., a team from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division swooped down on a beach in Dumfries, where two men were spotted with several knitted bags.

When accosted, the bags were searched and in them reportedly contained compressed ganja valued at $5.7 million.

Police also seized a boat fitted with two powerful 75HP engines, believed to have been used in the smuggling operation.

The men were taken into custody, but their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

Superintendent Oral Henry, Acting Director of FNID, described the bust as a critical strike against organised crime.

"The proceeds from these drugs are often used to purchase illegal firearms, which are then trafficked into Jamaica. By disrupting this operation, we have not only prevented a significant amount of drugs from reaching their destination, but have also cut off a key financial pipeline for criminal gangs," he explained.

He stressed that the division, working closely with its partners, will continue to target networks that fuel violence across the island.

The public is being urged to assist by reporting illegal firearms and narcotics to FNID at 876-923-6184, the National Intelligence Bureau at 811, Crime Stop at 311, or the nearest police station.
