JPL: Racing look to go back on top
Racing United have a chance to go back atop the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) table, if they are able to get their first win in five matches, when they entertain Treasure Beach at Ferdi Neita Park, today at 3 p.m.
The Portmore-based club has registered four consecutive draws in the league, but have held on to second despite dropping eight of a possible 12 points.
Racing (29 points) are three points adrift of leaders Montego Bay United who play tomorrow. Dunbeholden are eighth in the standings on 17 points.
Racing have been struggling for goals in recent weeks with just three goals in their five matches, compared to the previous five games where they scored 11 goals. Although coach Anthony Patrick is in the market for a clinical number nine, he knows they need to get their shooting boots back on quickly.
Treasure Beach got a much needed win on Sunday to snap a four-match losing run. Coach Kemar Ricketts lamented how their post Hurricane Melissa troubles have made things tough for them.
However, after the win over Molynes, he said all the players know and want the same objective and that they are rejuvenated by the victory and looking to pick up where they left off against Molynes.
"We have a clear objective. That is staying in the Premier League. So as many points as possible we want to collect along the way," he commented.
In the day's other match, Dunbeholden host Molynes at Dunbeholden Sports Complex at 3 p.m., with both teams looking to return to winning ways following disappointing losses in their previous games.
At Jarrett Park on Sunday, Dunbeholden conceded their first goal in seven matches after a 1-0 defeat to Montego Bay United.
It took a controversial second-half penalty to breach the impregnable Dunbeholden defence.
Playing at home today, Damion Gordon's team will look to shake off that loss and get back on the winning track.
Their opponents, Molynes, lost for the first time in five matches and coach Jermaine Thomas pointed out that it is difficult to lift his players for games against teams in the lower half of the table and that he expects an improved attitude against today's opponents.
"Yes, I am disappointed but we have to move on as quickly as possible. The turn around time is short, so we have to put that behind us and look forward to the next one.
"We have been doing well but in that game we were really flat. And it has to do with the motivation at times, depending on who we are going up against.
"It is something professionals must guard against. We did everything in the week to prepare them so we definitely have to improve our play," Thomas said.
